It was a small, unremarkable town in a semi-urban part of Central India.
Abhinav School was recruiting a new batch of teachers. Ramesh was selected as a Mathematics teacher. He had an excellent track record and was widely regarded as one of the best Mathematics teachers in the region.
During the final interview, the selection panel confirmed his appointment but informed him that he would have to complete a Computer Awareness course before joining.
The requirement came as a surprise to Ramesh.
“Why do I need to learn computers to teach Mathematics?” he wondered.
He dismissed the idea and declined to take the course. That evening, he even argued with his roommate at the guest house – “What is connection of computers to teaching Mathematics, yaar?”
The very next day, Shailaja was selected as an Art teacher after several rigorous interview rounds and stiff competition.
She too was informed that she would have to undergo the same Computer Awareness course.
Unlike Ramesh, she happily agreed.
“Why not? I’d love to do it,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to learn how to use a computer. This is a wonderful opportunity.”
Ramesh was completely surprised by her response.
